Once again it’s been a long time since I posted, but I should start posting more regularly soon.

About the Movie:

Kerry Wells (Kelsey Sanders), a college journalist and committed Christian with an effervescent personality, has been assigned to do a story on Blake Truman (Logan Bartholomew) the college’s newest and very popular hockey superstar. As a relationship between them begins to develop Kerry finds that Blake, who hides behind a tough and independent façade, is actually struggling through a difficult personal crisis and that he bears the cross of a secret he has kept hidden for years. Blake rebuffs Kerry’s suggestion that prayer might help ease his burden; he is convinced that modern science completely disproves the Bible, especially the opening verses of Genesis. Kerry — who is herself suddenly confronted with a challenge to her faith on another front — sets out to prove that science and Genesis are not in conflict and her quest leads to a startling revelation. Could it be that what science teaches us about creation and the Story as told in Genesis are both true!

This is a fun, family friendly film that I think anyone would enjoy.  I highly recommend it.

Caledonia: An Ancient Strife

Type: Historical Fiction

Time Period: Modern/Old

My Review:  I enjoyed this book very much.  The modern part of it didn’t interest me as much as the four novellas weaved throughout the story.  The were all about old Scotland and made for exciting reading.

My Overall Opinion:  If you are looking for a good book to keep you up at night, this is for you.

My Thoughts:  This book is a thrilling sequel to The Guardian Duke.  I love the characters, the descriptive language, and everything else about this book.  To give you a clue as to how much I liked it, I stayed up last night until midnight in order to finish it!  I would highly recommend this book for anyone who likes a good adventure/romance story.

A Short Break

I’m going to take a short break from book blogging.  I recently started up a new blog in Blogger and I want to devote my time to it for a short time.  Don’t worry…I won’t be gone forever.

• Purple is my favorite color.  I prefer a dark, rich purple to a lighter lavender color.
• I just switched my Jane Austen blog from WordPress to Blogger.  I’m slowly but surely adapting myself to Blogger.

• My favorite breakfast food to make is coffeecake.  I’m really good at it (IMHO).

5: What is your favorite artist or picture?  Hmmmm, I don’t really know…

 

6: If you had to describe your own looks as a character in a novel, what would you write?  Or your own looks as you wish they were.  You can have an imagination, y’know.  

 

Meg had long, dark-brown hair, and blue eyes with dark, quite long lashes.  She was quite tall and wore a silver ring on her left, middle finger.

 

7: What kind of music do you listen to most of the time?  Music from Jane Austen films.

 

8: What literary secondary character are you most like?  I like Jane Bennet from Pride and Prejudice a lot…especially when she’s played by the lovely Rosamund Pike.

 

9: What literary secondary hero-like characters do you love? (I know you can think of a million main characters.  So can I.  So I’m making it harder.)  I like John Chivery a lot…and I hope he did get a good wife because he deserves one.

 

10: What are your opinions of the subject of poetry?  I don’t really like poetry very much.

 

11: Which author’s writing styles do you admire the most?  I like Jane Austen, of course, because of her wit…she can always make me laugh and Charles Dickens is a really, really good writer too.  I think it’s a tie between them.

What I’m Watching

I just finished watching episode five.  Little Dorrit is my favorite movie of all time.  I’ll be posting a review once I’m done watching it.

Cleopatra VII: Daughter Of The Nile

Author: Kristiana Gregory 

Genre: Tween

My rating on a 1 – 10 scale: 8

Type: Historical Fiction

Time Period: Ancient

Main Characters: Cleopatra

My Review:  This is my favorite Royal Diary.  It starts with Cleopatra recording her worries that her evil sister Tryphena will have her killed since her father has gone into hiding.  The book continues along at a swift pace from Cleopatra’s escape to Rome with her father, to her account of staying a seaside villa, to their triumphant return to Alexandria.  This book is one of the best Royal Diaries written.

My Overall Opinion:  As I said above, this is my favorite Royal Diary.  It was the first one I’ve read and I’ve read it several times after that.  I would recommend this book to any girl.

What I’m Reading

I’m finding Wuthering Heights somewhat hard to understand right now, but I hope that as I get further into it, it will get easier.  Have you read WH?

Keeping Secrets

Author: Maggie Dana

Genre: Tween

My rating on a 1 – 10 scale: 8

Type: Fiction

Time Period: Modern

Main Characters: Kate, Holly, Angela

My Review:  Kate Macgregor feels responsible for the death of a beautiful sports horse.  When her new job includes horses, she panics.  She doesn’t want anyone to know her secret but she confides to her best friend, Holly, who was disabled in a driving accident.  When Angela finds out, what will Kate do?  

My Overall Opinion:  I really enjoyed reading this book.  It has twists and turns and surprises throughout.  I would highly recommend this to horse crazy girls, or anyone who likes a fast paced story with a good plot.

 

Marie Antoinette: Princess of Versailles

Author: Katherine Lasky

Genre: Tween

My rating on a 1 – 10 scale: 4

Type: Fictional diary/historical fiction

Time Period: 1700’s

Main Characters: Marie Antoinette 

My Review:  This Royal Diary is, in my opinion, one of the worse ones.  Marie seems very whiny and she’s bored all the time.  I did find her descriptions of Versailles life interesting, but not enormously so.  

My overall opinion:   This Royal Diary is definitely not one of my favorites.  I would probably not recommend it.

The Inheritance 1997 Review

I watched this lovely movie last night and I wanted to review it.  If you’ve noticed, I’ve started to get into the habit of reviewing movies that are based on books on this blog.  (BTW, a more detailed review of Little Dorrit is going to go live soon).  Please check out my review of the book.  I couldn’t find many pictures from the movie so I can’t illustrate the post with dozens of pics like I love to do.

Accuracy to the book:  Um, let’s not go there.  They change a lot of things from the book.  For one, the movie is set in Massachusetts while the book is set in England.  Percy is very handsome ( :)) though in the book he isn’t really all that handsome.  They’ve made Edith a lot bolder.  I can’t really say that this movie followed the book well.

Costumes:  The costumes, especially Edith’s ball gown are lovely.

Ida’s gowns are a little too ‘rich’ for my taste.  Beatrix Hamilton’s dresses are very pretty and Amy’s suit her exactly – a bit childish, yet elegant.

Scenery/Sets:  The scenery is beautiful.  Lush green colors and high peaks.  The race has some nice views.  The sets are also very well-done.  

Music:  I really think it’s music that makes or breaks a movie.  The music in this film is wonderful.  It reflects on the period nicely and I love listening to it.

The Characters:  Edith may be a bit bolder in the film than in the book, but she’s really sweet.  Percy, like I said before, may be too handsome for the role, but I like him a lot.  Amy is…unique and Ida is the type of villainess you love to hate.  

My Overall Opinion:  This is a lovely movie.  I always like movie that make me cry and this one does (“Ida deceived us and I beg your forgiveness from the bottom of my heart…Welcome home, Edith!”).  Everything about it is so nice – the plot, the acting, etc.  I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I found Bleak House a little hard going at first but now I’m really enjoying it.  Have you read it?

Isabel: Jewel of Castilla

Author: Carolyn Meyer

Genre: Tween

My rating on a 1 – 10 scale: 8

Type: Fictional diary/historical fiction

Time Period: 1400’s

Main Characters: Isabel

My Review:  This is my favorite Royal Diary.  One of the reasons is that the princess married for love and really did live happily ever after with her prince.  Isabel is in constant fear of being married off to men several times her age.  Her ladies-in-waiting rally around her, giving her their support, but what can she do?  Then, with the help of Bishop Carillo, she concocts a daring plan which just might get her married to a handsome, dashing prince.  Will she succeed, or will her brother stand in her way?

My overall opinion:   I really enjoyed reading this Royal Diary and would highly recommend it to any girl.

The Classics Club

Jillian is starting a Classics Club.  The challenge is to read a minimum of 50 classics in a maximum of five years.  I plan to read 50.  I’m going to re-read a lot of books (which is perfectly alright with her).  She put a big list of rules and regulations but I just want to read the classics.  I will post five different posts at different times with ten book titles in them.  Once I’m done the ten books, I will post a new list.  I think it will be easier to keep track of everything that way.
